Best Supporting Actress Penelope Cruz
Mondays, just like the Oscars, are horrible—but today, everything's bright and sunny.
The people I'm rooting for won:
• Heath Ledger (The Dark Knight), best supporting actor
• Penelope Cruz (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), best supporting actress
• A.R. Rahman (Slumdog Millionaire), best original score
I'll be doing cartwheels later on.

I would've wanted Gus Van Sant to win but Danny Boyle is a cool enough director anyway.
And yay for Japan's "Destinations" win, too!
ayos ang mga nanalo! yey! wala man lang surprise winner pero ayos na rin. hehe. buti na lang streep lost. and winslet won. and penn. and ledger. and cruz. napanood ko lahat mga movies nila. astig!
How about the host? I loved Hugh Jackman's singing and dancing. I never thought that he could do those things!
Thor: I like Van Sant too. He hasn't won an Oscar yet, right?
The Scud: Yeah, I agree, no surprise winner, although I was hoping Slumdog Millionaire wouldn't win Best Picture — but that's okay, I mean, I don't know what I would've done if Brad Pitt won for Best Actor. The travesty! The travesty!
dreamwalker: Hugh is pretty cool. He's a Broadway guy who can sing and dance like there's no tomorrow. :)
No Oscar(yet, should I remain hopeful? for Van Sant. He is severely overlooked (even after "Elephant," which I consider to be one of the most powerful films ever made).
i was secretly wishing for rourke and hathaway to spoil the party. haha... sila ang second choice(s) ko.
Thor: I love Elephant! I saw it back to back with Bertolucci's The Dreamers, I think. You can just imagine the effect of those films on me; love them both.
The Scud: I haven't seen Hathaway's film yet. I'm not a big fan of hers, but I'm very interested in watching Rachel Getting Married. Nung una, I thought Bride Wars was the film she was nominated for. I was like, "Huwhaaat?!" Rachel Getting Married pala, haha!
congratulations to sean penn, kate winslet and danny boyle. i also watched it.
the donG: Buti ka pa, you were able to watch it. I haven't seen the telecast yet; I just saw the results online.
powerful nga ang elephant. galing. the dreamers din.
watch ka rachel getting married. ganda!
The Scud: Sige, I'll try to watch Rachel Getting Married. Kate Hudson is not part of the cast, right?
bigla tuloy ako naging curious sa slumdog millionaire. gotta watch it soon.
Lawstude: Slumdog is an Oscar-bait, feel-good movie. If you're into films like this, you'll like it. :)
I've seen Vicky Christina Barcelona and Penelope was really good there!!! And yay for Slumdog!!! Love that movie...
gillboard: I'm glad that Penelope won!
Viva Penelope!
I'm glad that Heath Ledger won. His performance in the Dark Knight was truly impressive. I'll even say that I liked his performance better than Jack Nicholson.
Panaderos: That makes the two of us. Finally saw The Dark Knight two days ago, and I'm very impressed with Heath. Nicholson's Joker is nothing compared to Ledger's joker. :)
methinks nicholson's joker was campy. tama ba term ko? hehe...
The Scud: I think "campy" is perfect! Nicholson's Joker is very theatrical, very superficial.
He took Joker to a whole new level.
Departures ata yung Japan entry.
I agree that this is the kind of film that Gus Van Sant should have won for. Also rooting for David Fincher. I think it's kind of premature for Danny to win, his resume is not that incredibly plenty.
My bets are kinda locked because I ensured I was able to see all the nominated films, except the Foreign Language and the Docus. I was rooting for Mickey though, but can't complain with Sean, this is the kind of role, you would win an Oscar for. And Mickey... he is like the comeback story of the decade and no other actor could have played such an emotionally tough character of Randy "The Ram" Robinson. I'm excited of their reunion with Kim Basinger in The Informers, another Bret Easton Ellis adaptation.
As for Kate, well it's due but I wish it was for Revo Road, she was just hands down brilliant all throughout. Anne was painfully good in Rachel, and she has "arrived", truly. That tribute by Shirley McLaine should have made her faint! And Melissa Leo, thank God! I didn't get Jolie's nom though,it should have gone to Sally Hawkins, but it's the Oscars and you gotta have Brangelina there.
wow i love penelope..
jayclops: I don't like Anne Hathaway, but I'm very curious about Rachel Getting Married. I can't find a copy though, darn it.
RE: Angelina Jolie, I haven't see Changeling yet, but people are saying she's really good in that movie. I read a review in the Inquirer, and the guy said that even though Jolie was great, he kept seeing Angelina Jolie the actress, not the role she's playing (Christine Collins) — something to that effect.
They're doing another Bret Easton Ellis adaptation? Wow, I can't wait for that one! I have his book, The Rules of Attraction. Have you read that one?
Anne's pretty good in Rachel. The problem with Angelina in Changelin is she's so dolled up, she looks like a lipstick model than a grieving mother. The only Ellis book I'm able to read and most accessible is Psycho.
jayclops: American Psycho with Christian Bale is pretty cool. Great cast: Justin Theroux, Josh Lucas, Chloƫ Sevigny, Samantha Mathis... and Reese Witherspoon. Whatever happened to Reese? She's been doing crappy films lately; is she turning into Jennifer Aniston? Ehehe.
andy, meron sa quiapo! hehe... hathaway was amazing in that movie. pati the actress who played rachel.
i didn't like changeling. para syang well-made pinoy melodrama. :-)
The Scud: Jonathan Demme directed Rachel Getting Married, right? He's pretty cool, but the last Jonathan Demme film I saw is Philadelphia, a movie I'm not exactly keen on. Maybe it's because of Tom Hanks... That guy really gets on my nerves. Ehehe.
I miss Quiapo. Layo lang kasi; and the dudes hawking DVDs there are a bit rude.
andy > si demme nga. he rocks! he should make movies more often.
On Reese, I guess for actresses like her you can make your Oscar an excuse to make crappy films after, read, Halle Berry, or even actors, read, Cuba Gooding Jr.
Funny coz I stumbled upon one film critic who lambasted Rachel and labeled it one of the worst of the year. Demme also directed The Manchurian Candidate with Meryl, Denzel and the underappreciated Liev Schreiber. Rachel was called by critics as a "return to form" because Demme started making movies such as Rachel, e.g. Something Wild.
Btw, the one playing Rachel is the beautiful Rosemarie DeWitt. If you're a fan of Mad Men, she plays Jon Hamm's other woman in Season 1.
jayclops: You can say that again. The most notorious sell-out Oscar winner, I think, is Halle Berry: Catwoman, Perfect Stranger, Gothika... Swear to god, she never stops making shitty movies, does she?
i have a huge crush on kate winslet
buti naman at nanalo na sya ngayon
hehe
Raft3r dude! Kamusta? Nice to have you back!
Panood mo na The Reader ni Kate Winslet? I'll try to watch it this weekend; will let you know if it's okay.
prinsesamusang: Me too, I wasn't able to watch the Oscars, lulz. Sayang nga eh, host pa naman this year si Hugh Jackman! Would you know if he did a song-and-dance number there? Magaling kasi yun kumanta at sumayaw. Ehehe.
I like the soundtrack though — I think it's way, way better than the film.
Thanks for posting! :-)
so much has been said about this year's oscar
nyahaha
happy weekend!
Raft3r: Malay mo by next year ma-nominate si Marian Rivera sa Oscars... If ever that happens, pano yan, manonood ka ba? Pano kung nominated rin si Angel Locsin. Ehehe, joke lang. :-)
Mejo makulay yung CD cover. Ehehe.
nyahaha. diretso LA ako, kung sakali. hehe. i met her twice na. i dunno if she remembers me, though.
happy weekend, andy!
bakit ka online? walang gimik?
Raft3r: Hahahaha! So pano yun, sino magbabayad ng plane ticket mo? Dapat si Marian tutal mayaman naman yun. Ehehehe.
Ehehe.
wow
talaga?
jodie rocks
pati inside man panalo
demme directed silence of the lambs
magkasundo sila ni jodie, ayaw sa hannibal
nyahaha
Raft3r: Ahahahaha! Oo nga, magkasundo sina Jonathan Demme at Jodie Foster—pareho nilang tinanggihan yung Hannibal. I like Silence of the Lambs, kaya nung nalaman kung ayaw nilang gawin yung Hannibal, mejo na-irita ako. Ehehehe.
Sige, subukan kong maghanap ng Jodie Foster films to review. Huwag lang Anna and the King ha; hindi ko yata kakayanin panoorin yun. Haha.
yes, andy he did a song and dance number. parang tribute to musical and shit. partner nya si beyonce and they have back-ups who are guess who, zac efron and vanessa yud-gens (as pronounced by that kid playing the kid Jamal hehe how cute) and Mama Mia's Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper. Everyone was raving about it but I was not particularly blown away. During the opening he also had a number where he picked Anne Hathaway from the audience. It will be airing tonight on a local channel. It is worth seeing how they handed out the acting prizes, though, when you realized, it is after all scripted... well...
jayclops: Just saw the videos in youTube... horrible, man, horrible. "The Musical Is Back" is all over the place. It's so gaudy, it's beyond gaudy...
Wait, is that number about film or is it about Beyonce's thighs? Ehehe.
Andy! I just saw the trailer to UPCAT the movie - have you seen this?
dreamwalker: Yup. Saw UPCAT last year @ UP. Daming tao; na puno yung Film Center. Dun ko lang uli nakitang napuno yung FC; the last time I saw that happen was during an orientation thingie when I was a freshman. Ehehe.
Loved UPCAT! Finally a pinoy rom-com done properly that also doesn't shy away from indulgent kilig moments.
At halost lahat naka-UP Centennial jacket, kasama na ako dun. Hehehe. May nag-pipiktyur taking pa.
Thor: You're from UP? Pareho tayo; kaya pala click agad tayo, ehehe. Kala ko from Ateneo ka; na-wrong number ako dun ah.
English lit ka? Creative writing?
Galing hula mo, yep, Creative Writing. Student # never mind, hahaha! More than 10 years ago na. Tanders.
You also from CAL?
Thor: Ehehe, to hell with modesty. My student number is 94-18614. If I'm a character in LOTR, I'd be an Ent. Wait, is that what they call those ancient, mobile trees? Ehehe. I'm 32 by the way.
I took up Journalism, but I'm not much of a journalist. Ehehe.
If you're an Ent, then I'm, err, Ent-er. 91-05389, pamatay pag ni-require ng enlistment ay last 3-digits of the student number, lowest to highest. Missed Nat Sci II a couple of times because of this. Hehe.
I'm in advertising. Slightly creative writing. Still have the compulsion to write so I blog, blog, blog.
Thor: Goddamn Nat. Sci. II! I almost failed that shit! Ehehehe.
And to hell with that computerized registration thingie! How come they don't get to suffer as much as we did? Where's the justice in that? :p
And PE I is no longer a required subject! But the greatest injustice would be the optional CMT! Man, I suffered so much from my MS 11 Raya Dillo (sp?) platoon.
Thor: Haha! Quite true!
Dude, do you know any of these people: Angelique Munoz-Roux, Arnold Sebastian, and Chris Cruz. They're all from CAL.
Ach! I'm really bad with names. Aside from CW majors (all 7 of us), I only knew a couple of Comparative Lit. students.
Also, I finished my course a sem early (summer classes, super geek!) so I graduated first semester of 94.
If I see their faces maybe I'd recognize them.
i live a very sad life
hehe
Raft3r: I'm writing something about The Dark Knight. I'll upload it next week.
Still can't find a copy of The Brave One. I'll keep on looking... Is it good?
