Brillante Mendoza on the set of Serbis
Despite the raucous he caused last year with Serbis, the people at Cannes can't get enough of Brillante Mendoza—a gutsy filmmaker with a blunt, devil-may-care aesthetic. His latest film, Kinatay, will be vying for the coveted Palme d'Or alongside Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, Pedro Almodovar's Broken Embrace, and Lars von Trier's Antichrist.
It's hard to compete with the aforementioned three—famous filmmakers with a rabid, loyal following. Nevertheless, I'm waving my flag and hoping for a cinematic fluke courtesy of Mendoza.

Go Philippine Cinema!
bampiraako: Magaling nga si Almodovar. Paborito ko sa mga pelikula niya yung All About My Mother. Panalo yun.
We're all blogging about this! Hehe. See you in Cannes? :p
Thor Bee: Whoa, oo nga, halos sabay pala tayo nag upload ng Cannes post? Ehehehe.
I wanna go to Cannes; ganda ng lineup this year. Pero siyempre, wala akong pera. I have to do some major whoring to go there, ehehehe.
at pareho tayo ng fave almodovar movie. all about my mother. saw that in a film fest in GB1 many years ago. hilarious.
gusto mo pala punta cannes. ibubugaw kita gusto mo? hehe...
The Scud: Sige, ibugaw mo ko. :p
Ang jologs ko 'no? Lahat gagawin para lang makapuntang Cannes. :p
Andy: Major whoring? Need a pimp? Ehehe. We should go there at least before we turn 50. Haay.
Thor Bee: Inggit nga ko sa mga managers sa office namin; many are French. They can go to Cannes anytime they want.
And from what I heard, their museums are to die for.
wow
it's a good time to be a pinoy (again)
=)
Raft3r: This is good news indeed. Nice to hear something good about Filipinos for a change. :-)
hope we will win. cross fingers. ;D
elYAS: I hope so too. :-)
The Scud: Wala pa kong nakikitang DVD ng Serbis.
I don't think it's available in DVD though; VCD lang, pero paubos na yata kopya. I got mine from Astrovision in Megamall.
The Scud: Napanood mo rin ba yung Tambolista?
Nung una, nalilito ako sa dalawa: pareho kasing black and white, may common actors sila, at mejo hawig yung premise.
hindi ko pa napanood ung tambolista. i wasnt able to watch the film when it was shown in galeria. may dvd kayan nun?
i wish i had seen serbis. now i have to watch serbis and kinatay.
nice post. i suspect that i will start to stalk your blog from now on. :D
Victor Gregor: Didn't like Serbis too much; I'm dying to see Kinatay though. Coco Martin, who played a supporting role in Serbis, will also be in Kinatay.
Thanks for visiting my blog. I think I'll be stalking your blogs too — all three of them. :-)
another reason for the pinoys to celebrate:
marian is the new darna
yahoo!
hehe
btw, jodie foster was once made a juror sa cannes and backed out
wala lang
gusto ko lang sabihin
hehe
Raft3r: Wow, congrats! May bago na palang Darna? Kelan 'to magsisimula? Ding ang bato, ehehehe.
Ba't kaya nagback-out si Jodie sa Cannes?
im sure if doesnt win here, he'll be recognized by his great works.
astig ang mga pinoy sa industriyang ito.
the donG: Korek ka jan. Title ng kay Mendoza "Kinatay." Winner. =)
Almodovar's La Ley Del Deseo (circa 1987)
I think Filipinos can create film masterpieces. We just have to really know who we are as Filipinos for us to be understood by others.
Inkversified: I agree.
Oh, and we need money too; filmmaking can be quite expensive. =)
really? his film will be alongside that of tarantino's??
btw, i'm looking forward to watching the inglorious bastards. i just hope it's not as gory as kill bill.
Reena: Yup, Mendoza will be competing against Tarantino and 18 other filmmakers for the Palme d'Or; it's a stiff competition. :-)
Inglourious Basterds sounds interesting. Sayang Brad Pitt is the lead actor; I'm not very fond of his acting chops, hehe.
cinematic fluke
i like the sound of that
happy sunday, andy
jodie post na!
dali!
hehe
Raft3r: Fine, fine, one Jodie Post coming up, ehehe. I need more time though. :-)
Nice to know humahataw tayo sa ibang bagay maski bagsak ekonomiya natin, ehehe. :-)
i know it's late, but i still can't believe he won! in what is touted to be a smack down of auteurs man! take that you clit-clipping, scalp-stripping gods of the cinema!
jayclops: Where on earth have you been, buddy boy? It's been ages since I've heard from you. =P
Wait, you don't like Brillante Mendoza?
well i've been to places. work mostly, here in Mindanao lang naman. anyhoots, it's not that I don't like Mendoza, in fact I can't really comment because I haven't seen any of his films. I want to though! I think it's good, even great, that a Filipino gets to have this global recognition. My surprise really is more of awe, perhaps, of the relentlessness and triumph of the Pinoy.
jayclops: Try watching Mendoza's Tirador; that's my favorite film of his. It's availabe in VCD @ Astrovision and Video City.
