10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

In 10 Things I Hate About You, Heath Ledger plays Patrick Verona, a scruffy young man who says things like, “I didn't sleep with a Spice Girl — I think.”

Patrick is goaded by Joey Donner (Andrew Keegan) to date Kat Stratford (Julia Stiles), a precocious book worm completely uninterested in romance and all its complications.

Worlds collide, followed by a verbal banter between the foolhardy Patrick and the elusive, cat-like Kat.

"I'll take you places you've never been before," says Patrick.

"Like where?" Kat wonders. "The 7/11 on Broadway?"

Although trivial and predictable, 10 Things I Hate About You struck gold with Heath Ledger. He's amusing, most especially while singing a clunky rendition of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.”

Patrick can’t take his eyes off Kat. And Kat, try as she might, can’t help but fall for Patrick’s trailer park charm. When Kat bares her innards through poetry, 10 Things I Hate About You finally gets its groove on.

At that very moment, we're reminded how glorious and prickly high school is.

Yeah, I agree. It's definitely a teen flick made for prepubescent girls, ehehe.

You have a post with a similar title? Give me the link.

i saw this in my teens. haha. i don't remember enjoying the movie. naalala ko lang astig si julia stiles. may spunk.

Me too; I don't like the movie as much as I'd like to like it. Ehehe.

I only did it because today is Heath Ledger's first death anniversary, and I was thinking of writing about a Heath Ledger film. 10 Things I Hate About You is his first American film (and his first big break outside of Australia); I was like, Why not write about it?

It was only when I was writing it that I realized how bad the film is. Oh man, that film sucks so bad.

Too bad Mr. Ledger's gone. He already possessed a substantial body of work and could have become one of the best actors of our time had he lived longer.

I like Julia Stiles too. Though she may not be as glamorously beautiful as some of her peers, she always puts in a very credible performance on each of her roles.

Great blog you have here. I love going to the movies too and I always enjoy reading what people think of certain movies they've seen. Thanks for the comment and visit to my blog! Much appreciated.

Panaderos, thanks also for posting on my blog! I agree with you re: Heath Ledger. He was at his peak when he passed away. It's a shame he wasn't able to finish shooting Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. I heard that Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell stepped in to do "versions" of Ledger's role. I hope he wins a Best Supporting Oscar for The Dark Knight. He deserves it more than anyone else. (Ehehe, I'm a bit biased.)

Thanks again for dropping by!

did ya find it?

funny thing about ledger
yun tipong you don't know what you got til it's gone ba

feeling ko
parang sympathy vote na lang if he wins
although he was brilliant in batman
if he was alive, do you think he'll actually win?

Visual Velocity said...

Raft3r, sayang nga he passed away when he was at his peak. I wasn't really into him before, but when I saw him in I'm Not There and The Dark Knight, I was like, "Wow, this guy has substance."

You raised a valid point with the sympathy vote thingie, but check out his competition: Josh Brolin, Robert Downey Jr., Philip Seymour Hoffman, and Michael Shannon. I think it's anyone's game right now, although I'm hoping Ledger or Hoffman will win. Ehehe.

pareho kami ni panaderos. i like julia stiles too. astig.

Visual Velocity said...

The Scud, I agree. She's okay, I mean compared to Kate Hudson, she's definitely okay. At least she has three good films: The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Ultimatum. Hudson only has Almost Famous.

I'm bashing Kate Hudson again. Ehehe.

Raft3r, you have a copy of Freaky Friday? Patay tayo jan, ehehe.

How was it? Was Jodie Foster in that film?

i was still in college that time. julia and heath played their role well. i like the last part when heath gave julia a guitar.

The Scud said...

andy > i think raft3r was referring to the original freaky friday movie. the lindsay lohan film was a remake.

@the donG: For some odd reason, Heath and Julia look good together. The part I like most was when Julia read her poem: 10 Things I Hate About You. Heartbreaking.

@The Scud: Oh yeah, I forgot about that one! I thought he was referring to the Linday Lohan flick. :-)
